Spotlighting the Unsung Pillars of Progress #IWD2025

As I reflect on the significance of celebrating women, I am reminded of my formative years in a community where education was a rare privilege. In this context, I observed that women, irrespective of their educational background, were frequently marginalized and overlooked, particularly in meetings, social gatherings, and domestic settings.
The notion that women were often taken for granted was perpetuated by the pervasive myth that a man is the head of the household. However, as I grew older, I began to recognize the invaluable contributions that women made to their communities, despite their lack of recognition. It was evident that women were the unsung heroes, working tirelessly behind the scenes to support their families and communities.

My curiosity about this phenomenon led me to seek guidance from my grandmother, who was an exemplary figure in our family. Her response was enlightening: ‘Women are the pillars of their families, and their pride lies in nurturing and sustaining their loved ones.’ This wisdom resonated deeply, and I realized that the accomplishments of women often go unrecognized, as they work tirelessly behind the scenes to support their families and communities.

I am reminded of my mother, an extraordinary woman who, despite lacking formal education, was entrusted with the responsibility of mediating disputes in our village. Her wisdom, compassion, and dedication inspired me to pursue my aspirations, including becoming a lawyer. Throughout my childhood, my mother made immense sacrifices to ensure that my siblings and I received an education, often going without meals or dressing modestly to save money for our school fees.
Despite her remarkable contributions, my mother’s efforts went largely unrecognized by the world at large. This realization highlights the need to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of women, who often work tirelessly behind the scenes to support their families and communities.

I would also like to acknowledge the profound impact of Madam Agnes Igoye, patron and chief mentor of the Igoye Young Professional Mentorship Institute. Her selflessness, guidance, and unwavering support have been instrumental in helping me navigate the challenges of unemployment and rediscover my purpose. Madam Agnes is an exemplary mentor, who embodies the qualities of a teacher, mother, guide, protector, and role model. Her voluntary work, despite her busy schedule, is a testament to her kindness and generosity.
As we celebrate women’s day, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to these remarkable women who have enriched my life. Their contributions, though often unsung, have had a profound impact on their families, communities, and society at large. To all the women out there, I would like to acknowledge your invaluable contributions. Your tireless efforts, resilience, and determination are an inspiration to us all. Remember, your impact is felt far and wide, and your contributions matter greatly. The world is a better place because of women like you, who work tirelessly to support their families and communities.
Let us celebrate women’s achievements, support one another, and empower future generations to thrive. Together, we can create a brighter, more inclusive future, where women are recognized and celebrated for their remarkable contributions.
